Theres an essay on the Internet that I recently became aware of. It's on the topic of Male-Female relationships, and female bitchery. "Sexual Utopia in Power"by F Roger Devlin.
In particular, on sexual utopia - and how male and females have different versions of it. Moreover, according to its thesis, female utopia has won out over the last 40-50 years - at least partially because of the male instinct to protect females.
I cannot say I agree with everything it says, but I definitely agree with 80-90%.
Warning: Its fairly long - about 35 pages, but WELL worth the read. You'll be hooked by page 5 at the latest.

Interesting, although Devlin is incorrect in describing "males display, females choose" as universal.
Among the species this doesn't apply to are chimpanzees, our closest living relatives--the males fight with one another, and those who come out on top have all the women all the time. Those who are lower in the pecking order have the sloppy seconds. But the highest female is still subservient to the lowest male, who will physically assault her if she resists sexual advances.
I really cant comment as I dont know for sure.
But, Im pretty sure the lowest male only assaults or tries to fornicate with the highest female when the highest male isnt around, right?
Either way, among humans Devlin is much closer to unequivocally correct.
Males that remain are allied with but subservient to the dominant male (whereas other non-allied competitors are run out of town). The dominant male allows him to mate with other females, although not often the most desirable females as far as I know. But among chimps, females certainly don't do the selecting.
I agree that Devlin's arguments are fascinating, especially the 'hypergamy' vs monogamy or pologamy distinctions.
